:: Commissions :::: Musings ::So... I was browsing journals in my devWatch, and I came across one that sparked something about notes I have received, recent and old. Be forewarned, this is a semi-rant...

On Requests...
I am truly flattered you are interested in my work and wish to get something personally made by me that you can call your own. However, bear in mind I have paying customers for whom I give up pretty much all of my spare time to outside of work, school, and my raiding schedule in WoW. Don't get me wrong, I love drawing and may think on your request if it sparks my interest enough. But please, unless you directly commission me, do not expect me to be able to give turn-around on it. I have several outstanding mini-commissions that I already have enough trouble making time for.
On Art Use...
For the most part, as long as I am referenced properly and given credit followed by a proper link, you are free to use my art NONCOMMERCIALLY. Fan movies, signatures, avatars, etc, for PERSONAL NONPROFIT use is okay. As long as you credit me, you do not even have to ask. If you plan to use any of my work for profit, you can consider the above null and void. Simply not allowed unless it is one of my 100% original works (most of my work is fanart, har har) from which you will have to arrange some form of royalty.
On My Art Progression...
If you are new to my dA page, please take a moment to look at my info on the bar under my avatar and note that I have been registered on deviantArt for over six years (too long, imo), only HALF of the time I have spent drawing on a regular basis, and this goes without saying that I have been drawing almost my entire life (from 6, to 12, to 25... see where I am getting with this?). I did not develop my skills overnight. I worked long and hard to get to where I am today. I honestly think my progression is tremendously slower than a number of artists I have watched evolve over the years I have been displaying my art online.
Furthermore, there is no "secret" to my work. The only way one develops his or her skills is through practice. Lots and lots of practice. There is no easy way to "draw better." Also, when it comes to digital work, study the software. There are a number of different options out there: Photoshop, Painter, Open Canvas, Deleter (same engine as OC), The Gimp, Paintshop, etc. Take the chance to try several of them if you can. Otherwise, learn the ins-and-outs of the software you have access to and learn how to make it work for you. In my case, I have the most experience with Photoshop (from version 5.5 to 8/CS). As such, I have learned to make it work for me. I have experimented with Painter and OC, and while they are more intuitive with reading brush strokes from my stylus, I am simply that much more comfortable with Photoshop's tools because I know them far better than the tools in Painter and OC. Granted OC is very straight-forward and easy to use, but the end result it produces for me is not as refined as I can make my work in Photoshop look.
For those of you who have taken the time to read this whole boring journal, thank you for your patience.
-- THE TLDR VERSION --
DO NOT send me notes along the lines of "Please draw this," unless you want to commission me.
DO feel free to use my art for NONPROFIT and remember to credit me with links.
DO NOT use my fanart for profit. If you want to make use of one of my original works, arrange a royalty or no deal.
DO NOT ask me about any "secrets" to my art. There are none. STUDY your subjects and media. Practice, practice, practice. I have put 20+ years of work into my drawing skills. I am sure it will not hurt to practice a little extra to develop your own skills, especially if you have just picked up drawing as a new hobby.
I will respond here saying that I am truly flattered you are interested in my work and have taken the time to message me. However, I do not have the time to cater to "freebies" or improper use of FANART.
Remember, what you gain out of your art depends on how much you personally put into it.
