2012-09-29: Draw This Again - Sora and Kairi by hikari-chan 2012-09-29: Draw This Again - Sora and Kairi by hikari-chan
This piece has to be my most popular of all time: [link]

Full version of the new image: [link]

When I saw this contest pop up, I figured I would give a little something to all the people who have supported me through the years and see just how much I have improved.

Bear in mind the original is a 300x300 oekaki. There was never a larger scale image to begin with, much to the sadness of everyone who requested that I repost this image with the mythical "full resolution" version.

Despite everyone else's complaining about the old one looking "better," I say you've improved dramatically. I like that you've evolved from a generic anime style to something unique to you. It looks gorgeous!

If you ask me the first one looks better in terms of the feelings that come through - it feels more lively, and her smile feels more honest. Technically, of course, the second one is better by miles, though the lightning on her right side feel somehow off for me. I think it's because it blends too much into the background.

The only thing I didn't like on the new one is that the ocean looks less lively! :( But other than that, the new one is much better looking! :D

This can be considered a refernece to what we can expect to see in KH 1:5 HD.

I am refering to the remasterd version of Kingdom Hearts that will be coming out in 2013

To each his own. Though it would be nice if you could say why you prefer the old one. Even if it's something as simple as the more "anime" style of the first.

I don't mean to be rude by interceding, but I used to love your old art, so I can give my two cents as to why the former version might come off as more appealing.

I've seen this happen with artists who focus too hard on the technical nooks and crannies of their art, that they start to lose the character and life they could once convey. When I look at your oekaki, there is so much expression in the characters' faces, and everything looks so natural and organic, like you enjoyed every part of drawing it. The second version shows me that you learned backlighting and colour theory, but everything else is lost. I don't mean to be harsh, but it's just generic anime that I can't relate to anymore. Even the anatomy and proportions seem to be more awkward, flat, and stiff.

I hope this provided some insight as to what appeals to some people in your works.

Sorry to be a nag, but which of my older images in particular did you like? I've been having conundrums dealing with what I've lost between my older and newer works. Sure coloring and lighting are better now, but everything else about my newer images has been throwing me for a loop and driving me insane.

I'd really like to recapture what I lost....

I remember being really enamoured by your Harry in your fanart "The Dueling Club" when I was 14. It's still in my favs and I still think it has character and I can appreciate it. I even still like the black and white fancharacter picture you drew. The KH picture is probably my favourite from you, even though I am not even a fan. I can understand that you are tired of it because you've had it with you for so long, with flaws you can't fix, but some years later, you will grow tired of the new one too. It will be interesting to see how you feel about their differences when the time comes.

People who strive only to improve technical skills in art won't easily see the desired results without losing something in its core because they are training the left (logical) side of their brain and forgetting about the right. But now that you've learned new things, I hope that you can find your way back to exercising your creativity again, and just feel your way through your art like you used to. I wish you luck :)

Hmm... The feedback is greatly appreciated. I know a lot of my newer stuff has been strained with the technical aspects that I was trained to follow in the courses I . It's odd, you have the classes that berate you for exaggerations, but at the same time berate you for your proportionally correct images for looked too stiff.

It's a vicious cycle....

Regardless, I've been trying to get back into the more "natural" flow of my style in my comic work. Granted, there's still some stiffness, but I think it's getting better...

I completely understand what you mean, but at the same time, there were still a ton of anatomical errors with the first. I think the major problem is that I tried too hard to make the same image and restrain it into the game's "proportion" (I was following Nomura's character designs point for point), and you're right, I didn't have "fun" making the second.

Even with all the problems that cropped up and the fact that people just don't like it, I prefer the second. I'm tired of the older image. I think I may just take these two images down because I don't want to be remembered for just this KH fanart. I didn't even know anything about the game when I drew the first.

I do take your input to heart though. I have been quite angry with how stiff a lot of my work has been lately. I really need to sit down and do some studies...

Can you explain how to place the deviations into the slots on this template? Do you need photoshop or something?

You will need an image editor of some kind. The files provided were in Photoshop format though. So you will at least need a program that can read PSD files.

I really like this redraw. It's sharper with a nicer and smoother method of coloring. Going with a less sugar-sweet style(big anime grin and such) was a good choice too. Then again some people like the other style(I still draw like that ^^; ), I just think the new style works better in this case. :)

Funny you mention the grin. When I look back at it now, it looks so out of character, that's why I dialed it back to a more relaxed smile. :D

overall the new one looks better of course. :)
But one thing looks better in the original: the ocean. In the new version the ocean seems flat while in the old one it has some wave-like structure.
